Solar House Tours

October 3, 2025 @ 9:00 am 5:00 pm

Welcome to The Engineering Place at NC State Solar House! The Solar House, designed and built in 1981 by NC State College of Engineering researchers, was created to promote and demonstrate renewable energy technologies to the community.

Are you ready to embark on a journey toward a sustainable future? Are you curious about renewable energy and its tremendous potential? Our focus at the Solar House is to provide opportunities for the public to learn about reusable and sustainable energy by hosting tour groups and providing K-12 engineering programs focused on renewable energy.

To celebrate Energy Week, we are offering guided tours of the solar house, exploring its innovative design and discussing the various sustainable features incorporated into the building. Join us and witness first hand how solar panels, passive heating and cooling systems, and energy-efficient appliances work together to create an environmentally friendly living space.

Tours will start every hour, on the hour from 9 am to 5 pm (last tour starts at 4pm).  No registration required.

We look forward to you joining us at the Solar House and learning more about how engineers are involved in renewable energy!

The Solar House is next to the McKimmon Conference Center at the corner of Western Blvd. and Gorman Street and parking is free. The Solar House address is 1201 Gorman St, Raleigh, NC 27606
