The projects for these facilities were developed utilizing the utility savings from the project over time to install energy efficiency equipment. These pieces of equipment have provided reductions in electricity, steam, water, their associated pollutants, and reduced utility costs. This means that no additional tax funds were required to improve the University’s systems, while allowing continued growth of the University. The Cates Utility Plant is the largest performance contract within the State of North Carolina government. These projects have resulted in the University reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 13.5%.
