Chu.  “By investing in scientific researchers in their formative years, we
can provide scientists with the resources to do some of their most exciting
and productive work.”

To be eligible for the competition, a researcher must be an untenured,
tenure-track assistant professor at a U.S. academic institution or a
full-time employee at a DOE national laboratory. The applicant must also
have received a Ph.D. within the past ten years.

Each university award will be at least $150,000 per year for five years to
support summer salary and other research expenses. For DOE national
laboratories, awards will be at least $500,000 per year for five years to

Energy Secretary Chu, Agriculture Secretary Vilsack Announce $6.3 million for Biofuels Research

Summary: U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu and U.S. Department
of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced today the joint selection of
awards of up to $6.3 million towards fundamental genomics-enabled research
leading to the improved use of plant feedstocks for biofuel production.

These grants will be awarded under a joint DOE-USDA program begun in 2006
that is committed to fundamental research in biomass genomics, providing the
scientific foundation to facilitate use of lignocellulosic materials for
bioenergy and biofuels. Since lignocellulosic crop plants are less intensive
to produce and can grow on poorer quality land, competition with crops grown
for food production is avoided.

DOE will provide $4 million in funding for four projects, while USDA will
award $2.3 million to fund three projects. Initial funding will support
research projects for up to three years.

ACEEE Forum on Energy Efficiency in Agriculture

Food and Energy from the Ground Up: Efficiency’s Role in Sustainable Agriculture

2010 ACEEE Forum on Energy Efficiency in Agriculture

February 7–10 , 2010 Monona Terrace • Madison, WI

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy is pleased to announce the 3rd ACEEE Forum on Energy Efficiency in Agriculture. The “Ag Forum” will be held February 8-10, 2010 at the picturesque Monona Terrace in Madison, Wisconsin. We are organizing this conference with our partners and Co-Chairs, Amelia Gulkis (EnSave), Rich Hackner (Wisconsin Focus on Energy and GDS Associates), and Mike Morris (National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT)).

As many of you know, ACEEE hosted a successful Forum on Energy Efficiency in Agriculture in 2008. The previous Ag Forum focused on the intersection of food, fuel, and sustainable agriculture, which resulted in spirited sessions addressing issues in agricultural communities across the country. Details about the 2008 Ag Forum are on our Web site: http://aceee.org/conf/08ag/index.htm.

Since the 2008 Ag Forum, the national conversation about energy, agriculture, food, and fuel has continued at all levels. Congress passed a new Farm Bill in the Spring of 2008, which included several important energy efficiency-related provisions, notably the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP).  A new president has taken office, and a new organic garden is growing on the White House lawn.

With all of this in mind, ACEEE has begun organizing a third Ag Forum to address the importance of energy efficiency on farms, ranches, and throughout rural communities across the country. The Ag Forum traditionally convenes a diverse group of participants-from utilities and policymakers to farmers and ranchers, scientists, and advocates-and the ACEEE Ag Team is working hard to expand our network to bring more voices and ideas to the next Ag Forum.

We are just beginning to develop the steering committee, themes, and agenda. We welcome your feedback and comments. ACEEE conferences are participatory events, so we invite you to help us by volunteering to help organize panels or sessions, recruit speakers, and publicize the Ag Forum.

Clean Coal Technologies Research Program Request for Proposals, School of
Energy Resources, University of Wyoming

The Clean Coal Task Force (CCTF), composed of the members of the Wyoming
Energy Resources Council to the University of Wyoming School of Energy
Resources, requests proposals for research concerning clean coal
technologies.

The Clean Coal Technologies Research Program was created to stimulate
research to enhance and improve the use of primarily sub-bituminous coal at
high altitudes. Proposals are solicited from academic institutions and
private industry. They will be evaluated competitively based upon their
probable benefits to the State of Wyoming through improved use of Wyoming’s
coal resource. The results of the research shall be available for public
dissemination.

The Legislature of the State of Wyoming has appropriated funding for this
research program that now totals $13,900,000. Expenditure of these funds
requires a dollar-for-dollar match from non-state funds. Funds for
successful proposals approved by the CCTF will become available soon after
review by the Joint Minerals, Business and Economic Development Interim
Committee at their meeting that is anticipated to occur in October 2009.
Funds are to be expended by June 1, 2012.

Proposers may request between $250,000 and $8,000,000 in research program
funding to be matched dollar for dollar by non-state funds. The Clean Coal
Task Force will forward to the Joint Minerals, Business and Economic
Development Committee the projects they recommend by no later than September
30, 2009. Projects will be completed and unexpended funds revert on June 1,
2012. http://www.uwyo.edu/sersupport/Clean%20Coal/Clean%20Coal%20RFP/Wyoming%20Clean%20Coal%20RFP%202009.pdf
